How to make matcha latte

Looking for an energizing and healthy start to your day? Try our simple matcha latte! Matcha is known for its delicate flavor, green appearance, and natural caffeine content that provides steady energy without the caffeine crash. This recipe is perfect as an alternative to coffee or as a delicious afternoon drink.

What is matcha latte?

Matcha latte is a hot or cold drink made from matcha powder and milk. Matcha comes from Japanese green tea leaves that are ground into a fine powder. This makes matcha latte rich in antioxidants and natural nutrients, while also providing a creamy and slightly sweet taste.

There are many different types of matcha, just as there are many types of black tea ( Darjeeling , Assam , etc.) and green tea ( Gunpowder , Dragon Well , etc.). The matcha varieties that are drunk neat are very exclusive and of high quality, while some are intended for use in food and therefore have a slightly lower quality and sharper taste. The quality is reflected in the price. We have one of each of the two varieties: our Premium matcha and our The barista's matcha .

Matcha latte has become a very popular drink and it's probably because the milk that is added balances out some of the vegetal flavor from the green leaves.

Why drink Matcha Latte?

  • Steady energy: Matcha contains caffeine combined with L-Theanine, which provides balanced energy without the jittery feeling.
  • Full of antioxidants: Matcha is rich in antioxidants that can support the body's natural functions.
  • Calming and focus-giving: Matcha can contribute to relaxed focus, perfect for quiet mornings or work breaks.

How to make a matcha latte

(Time required: Under 10 min )

For one cup of matcha latte you will need:

  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder (high quality for best taste)
  • 2-3 dl milk (optional: regular milk, oat milk, almond milk or soy milk)
  • 1-2 tsp honey or other sweetener (e.g. agave syrup)
  • 1 tablespoon hot water (approx. 80°C, not boiling)

Procedure

1. Sift the matcha powder:
To avoid lumps, sift the matcha powder into a cup or bowl using a small sieve.

2. Make a matcha paste:
Add 1 tablespoon of hot water to the matcha powder. Use a bamboo whisk or small milk frother to whisk until you have a smooth, lump-free paste.

3. Heat the milk:
Heat the milk to the desired temperature. Do not let it boil. For an extra creamy texture, froth the milk with a milk frother.

4. Mix together:
Pour the hot milk over the matcha paste. Add sweetener to taste and stir gently.

5. Top and enjoy:
For an extra touch of luxury, top with a sprinkle of matcha powder or cinnamon for a nice finish.

  • Feel free to add the desired amount of honey/sugar to the pot (maybe 1 tablespoon?)
  • Feel free to sprinkle some matcha on top if you made the milk thick enough (otherwise the cinnamon will flow out). It will look extra good on Instagram!

Tips for the best matcha latte

  • Choose the right matcha: Preferably use ceremonial grade matcha for the best taste and quality.
  • Avoid boiling water: Boiling water can give matcha a bitter taste. Keep the temperature around 80°C.
  • Experiments with milk: Oat milk provides a sweet and creamy texture, while almond milk provides a lighter flavor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between matcha and green tea?

Can I make cold matcha latte?
Yes! Follow the same recipe, but use cold milk and ice cubes instead of hot milk.

Why does matcha sometimes taste bitter?
Bitter taste often comes from low quality powder or using water that is too hot. Choose a good quality and follow the temperature tips.
